Mold – A Danger To Your Health?

Toxic or Not – Here We Come …

There are mould species that are non-toxic and there are mould species that are extremely toxic.  Some moulds cause allergic reactions and asthma.  Certain moulds produce toxins (mycotoxins) as a by-product of living.

Short term reactions can include: sneezing, watery eyes, coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, lethargy, fever, cold and flu symptoms, nose bleeds, digestive problems and joint problems. Long term symptoms can include: dermatitis,  impaired immune function, infections, lung damage, Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, Pulmonary hemosiderosis, ocular disease, deafness, cancer even death.

Susceptibility

Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to these contaminants.

Mycotoxins are produced by fungi (mold)

to give them a competitive edge against other microorganisms including other fungi.  There are over 200 recognized mycotoxins and over 1000 species of moulds.  Many are harmful to humans when inhaled, ingested or brought into contact with human skin.

Mycotoxins can produce a variety of short term as well as long term health effects.

Aflotoxin :

is one of the most potent carcinogen known to man and has been linked to a variety of health problems.  Aflotoxins are primarily produced by Aspergillus.

Ochratoxin :

is primarily produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium.  This type of toxin damages the kidneys, liver, immune system and is a suspected carcinogen.

T-2 Toxin:

is a tricothecene produced by Fusarium and Stachybotrys and is one of the more deadly toxins.  T-2 if ingested in sufficient amounts can severly damage the entire digestive tract, causing rapid death due to internal hemorrhage.  T-2 has also been implicated in toxic aleukia, pulmonary hemosiderosis (bleeding of the lungs).

Fumonism:

is a toxin associated with Fusarium.  Fumonism causes leukoencephalomalcia or liquefaction of the brain in animals.  In humans it it has been linked to esophageal cancer.

Vomitoxin:

is associated with Fusarium which can cause acute gastrointestinal illness.

Citrinin:

is produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus.  This toxin can cause renal damage and bronchial constriction.

Satrotoxin H:

are mainly produced by Stachybotrys charturum and Trichoderma viridi.  High doses or chronic low doses are lethal.

Gliotoxin:

is an immunosuppressive toxin produced by Alternaria, Penicillium and Aspergillus.

Patulin

: is a mycotxin produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus which causes hemorrhaging in the brain and lungs.

Sterigmatocystin:

is produced by Aspergillus versicolor and is considered to be carcinogenic.

Now what ?

You didn’t have to really understand each of the specific toxicology areas mentioned above to get a feel for the danger that mold can pose.

Some of the world’s hardiest insects, like termites, dust mites and some of the world’s most prevalent rodents ( you know, the type that eat your expensive rat poison, get a little sick then laugh at you ) also fall prey to mold.

If you are a house inspector, please ensure that you are properly certified to detect mold before signing off that the house is ok.

If you are a home owner with plants inside, or a new home owner who has taken over an inexpensive house that you suspect may have houses numerous plants ( lets not get too specific here ) then you really need to get your home tested for mold spores.

Children and your parents will be particularly susceptible.

Do I Have Mould?

Do I have mold ?

Do I have mold ?

Virtually everyone has one type or another of mould somewhere in their home. Although not all types are toxic, even exposures to non-toxic mould types poses a health risk (allergies and asthma).  It is often difficult to distinguish between mould types without lab testing.

Common Mould (Non-Toxic)

The black mould that you may see growing on grouting and walls on showers and bathtubs is unlikely to be dangerous. The most common black mould is Cladosporium. Although it can be an irritant to those with asthma or respiratory disease, it is not known to pose any toxic hazard.  It can be removed with various household cleaners and bleach. The most effective way to prevent it is by providing adequate ventilation. Vent fans should be installed in all areas where dampness can occur.

Black mould growing on tiles and grout can be treated with bleach (a cup to a gallon), saturate the area for approximately fifteen minutes, then wash with a strong detergent. The area must then be thoroughly dried. Note: the bleach will kill the mould, but may not remove all the dark pigments associated with it.

Toxic Black Mould

Black Mould or what is referred to often as Toxic Mould are common terms used to describe a slimy, greenish black substance which can result in a very serious health risk. While toxic black mould is less common than other mould species it is far from rare. Cellulose is the only known host for the dangerous strains of Stachybotrys and Memnoniella, which produce mycotoxins. The mycotoxins grow in damp areas. Substances where this mould can be found include places where water has soaked wood. Ceiling tile, wall paneling, studs, cellulose insulation, drywall (gypsum board, carpet backing, cardboard and other items made of natural fibers such as cotton can act as a host. It can infest areas in the floors, walls and ceilings. Mould problems resulting from flooding should be treated professionally to avoid health risks. If the black mould is growing on materials that do not contain cellulose, it is unlikely that either Stachybotrys or Memnoniella are present. If you suspect Black Mould, have it tested before attempting to remove it.

Spores from dried mould are very dangerous and should be cleaned with caution. Never scrape or scratch dried mould, because the spores will become airborne and create a serious inhalation risk. A respiratory mask and eye protection are necessary and adequate clothing to prevent skin contact is recommended. Most mould infested areas are relatively small and are usually the result of small leaks or plumbing problems. If the problem is more internal such as on insulation or throughout a carpet, the only solution is to have the items professionally removed, before being replaced. Mouldy areas over two feet, are considered “heavily infested” and professional removal is strongly advised. Some insurance companies cover the cost of mould removal or remediation under certain circumstances. Check with your insurance agent to find out if you are covered.

According to the CDC, there are some preventative measures you can personally take to battle black mould.

  • Keep the humidity level in the house below 40%
  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months
  • Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in kitchen and bathrooms
  • Add mould inhibitors to paints before application
  • Clean bathrooms with mould killing products
  • Do not carpet bathrooms and basements
  • Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.

What the Heck is Mold ?

What is Mold?

In general, mold and mildew are different names for the same thing — a very simple life form that

Aspergillus Mold

Aspergillus Mold

lacks the ability to photosynthesize. Mold uses enzymes to digest nutrients from other organic materials — such your collections. Essentially mold consists of fungi that grow in filamentous forms. Many fluoresce under UV light — often helping to verify their presence.

The two most common “problem” molds for preservations are the Ascomycetes and Fungi Imperfecti.

The Ascomycetes include over 29,000 species, many of which are disease causing. The Fungi Imperfecti is the second largest subdivision, containing over 17,000 species and they are also very aggressive agents of biodeterioration. The molds that we are most commonly concerned with reproduce through asexual means, forming what are called conidia, although they are often called “spores.” Conidia are typically 5 to 50 m in diameter (Aspergillus fumigatus conidia are among the smallest, measuring about 2.5 m) and are very easily air borne.

Each vegetative filament of fungus is called a hypha and a large mass of hyphae is called a mycelium. These hyphae are the actively growing, assimilative phase of the fungi and new growth typically occurs as a linear elongation of the hyphae.

Molds often appear as circular spots, resulting from the outward growth of hyphae. As the mold spreads, it begins to look more like a solid mat across objects. It is important to understand that just as mold grows outward, it also grows down, into the substrate, of the books, bindings, paper, and leather.

Molds are everywhere and should not be viewed as a sudden “infection.” The majority of fungal conidia in the indoor environmental come from the outdoors. Consequently, the most common molds are Cladosporium and Alternaria, with lesser quantities of Aspergillus and Penicillium. The number of conidia may reach one million per cubic meter under favorable conditions, although levels of 10,000 to 100,000 per m³ are more common.

Aureobasidium are stain fungi, commonly causing staining of wood finishes. Mucor and Penicillium are examples frequently associated with stone, producing acids which result in solubilization of silicates and the weathering of stone. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium,

Fusarium, and Paecilomyces are often associated with the discoloration of paint. Fungi such as Aspergillus and Penicillium are often found colonizing adhesives and caulks, with Penicillium in particular found associated with PVC, plastic, and rubber. Aspergillus is associated with surface discolorations of polyesters. Carpets are frequently attacked by Penicillium, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Mucor. Library collections under damp conditions are frequently infested with Penicillium, Fusarium, Aspergillus, and Cladosporium.

When you ask yourself, “What really is mold” – you might look at it at being the exact opposite of living breathing creatures. It treats pets, pests, rodents, insects including those that we really need like bees in the same equal killer method as it doles out to humans.

Exercise and Mold

Exercise and Mold

Healthy people can die of diseases brought on by mold just as easily as unhealthy people can die from cigaret smoking and other unhealthy practices.

No amount of exercising, eating right or watching calories will lengthen your lifespan or give you a higher quality of life if you are ingesting a large number of mole spores in your home.

Think about that for a moment. Above is the scientific formula for mold spores and what the scientists call them, but in your home with your pets, children and older parents, non of that matters. What really matters is that you don’t create an environment for mold, particularly black mold to thrive.

How do you do this? Do you know that certain plants in the house can emit up to half a kilogram of moisture into the air each night? When you give 10 gallons of water to your plants over a week, where does that water go?

Think about that for a bit.

Understanding whats happening with the Mold Removal

Are you a fan of taking old, run-down buildings and returning them to their former glory? If so, you are likely familiar with mold as this is something which can be found in many structures. However, many people who do perform work around the house may think that there are no mold remediation dangers and may try to clean up problems themselves. This can be a huge mistake and lead to a potentially dangerous situation.

Often, people who work at renovating their homes may not recognize the different types of mold that can occur in a structure. There are two main types. One is non-toxic. The other is the toxic black mold that has been in the news and has been mentioned frequently on home improvement shows.

Although both kinds of fungus can cause health problems the fact is that toxic black mold is a greater concern because it can be truly deadly and in a very quick way. There have been cases of people who have died or suffered permanent respiratory problems as a result of exposure to airborne spores or the actual fungus. What is worse, any kind of fungal growth can seek out and eat into the wooden beams and supports that hold your home up. Slowly, over time, these can begin to weaken which can be a huge safety risk.

There is one main cause of fungal growth in a home and that is moisture. If you have had portions of your home submerged for any length of time, you should not be surprised to see fungus growing after the water has subsided. In a home where there has not been flooding, there can often be an issue with dampness in areas such as bathrooms and around kitchen sinks. As well, leaking roofing or a bad foundation can also lead to the growth of mold. It is always a great idea to let a professional take a look at the kind of mold you have found in order to determine whether it is non-toxic or deadly.

Mold Remediation

If it is determined that a patch of mold is something you can handle yourself (generally this means any non-toxic fungus growth of less than six inches) you will still need to wear a mask and gloves. You want to make sure that you are not breathing in any spores and that your skin does not come into contact with the fungus and become irritated.

However, there may be times where you find a major growth of fungus or a small patch of black mold. If this happens you need to call in the experts to clean up the situation as completely as possible. They will likely have commercial grade air scrubber products to catch spores, commercial masks, hazmat suits, specific mold retardants and scientific off the shelf mold cleaning products that will keep the fungus from returning and which will help keep the spread of mold to other areas of your home from occurring.

You want to make sure that you are doing more than just cleaning up the growth itself. You also need to make sure that you are able to correct any areas where moisture is getting in. Then, you can ensure that your health is protected as completely as possible.

Professional mold remediation services may seem expensive but when you consider how much it can cost in terms of health, it may be for the best to call them and let them handle your mold problem. Remember that any patch over six inches in size or which is made up of toxic black mold really needs to be taken care of by a professional who has the correct equipment and who knows what they are doing.

What is Manufacturing Software ?

Manufacturing software is that form of software which is enormously sophisticated due to the components used upon and attached to software with International Technical Standards and Developmental processes. Software which is produced or is manufactured domestically isn’t genuine and might turn out to be fake or spurious by nature and there are conditions of duplication and piracy of the components installed inside the CPU in a form of software hardware. The manufacturing components of software include the moulding processes for composite plastic materials or items. The simulation process of software consists of draping; mold filling; Patterns that are flat by nature; and other curing processes could cut further wasting of the components or materials and costs of components. An excellent software programming and monitoring of software development is ensured in the first instance. It’s not just about software manufacturing of programming terminology to be taken care about but it improves wiring and maintenance cost dramatically. The latest manufacturing of software includes the latest version of upgrading particular software.

It enables editing and batch-downloading parameters from personal computer hardware and reduces up the working required to set up other form of parameters. The version supports table-formatted parameter editing with improved usability. The in-build technical setting of the computer monitor is also unique and dynamic with sophisticated processing to register the amount of things to be used with keyboard keys. The control performance is finely-tuned by it. The manufacturing process exports parameters of software in HTML format and CSV. The Software’s CPU unit temperature component is essential part therefore thorough analyses is needed for installing thermal input temperature controller device which can automatically detect the amount of temperature increase inside and may start automatically to cool it down. It detects the humidity with an accuracy of +_ 3% in a compact body. The manufactured sensing components detection; analysing; measuring and processing processes all happens at the production sites for further positioning or re-positioning; measuring height; the length; its displacement and appearance of the software device in the stipulated time period. The prediction and prevention of future events are also handled by the manufacturing units itself if any contingency occurs therein.

The separate-amplifier sensor has the special light i.e. transmitted through the transmitter through fibre to enable detection at the narrow places and other locations with certain limited assess to the component. The automation processing of software devices could efficiently do the billing (with or without bar codes); receivables and payables; ordering; inventory management; financial management; etc. Promotional schemes are also managed by it with number of claims and incentives with tightly integration of the number of items mentioned above. Automatic application of schemes and credit notes relieves the pain of manually tracking inside the invoice of sales. It could transmit reports to principal company over the internet. It also has the provision to maintain and track up the utilization of cheques. FIFO principles are automatically generated as pick lists this basically help in the liquidation of old stocks firstly and then further utilize other future transactions. The system doesn’t require any dedicated connectivity with any such distributors.

Important Tips To Know About Candidiasis

Contraceptive hormones and candidiasis:

This is a real problem for women with candidiasis who are on the pill. It is estimated that acute vaginal candidiasis (thrush) is caused by the contraceptive pill in up to 35 per cent of women, with many other women being affected to lesser degrees. Chronic yeast vaginitis is worse during pregnancy and at certain times of the month when progesterone hormone levels are high. Therefore it is thought that the progesterone component of oral contraceptives is the cause of further aggravation of vaginal candidiasis.

A yeast infection, anywhere in the body, provides a ‘reservoir’ for Candida albicans, from which a systemic form of the infection can develop. The resultant breakdown in health, combined with the further development of food and chemical allergies, can be catastrophic. It is vital, therefore, to eliminate anything, be it foods or drugs, which will encounrge the growth of yeast in the body. This may well mean a year or two off the pill to enable the immune system to overcome the yeast build-up and restore good health.

Avoid mouldy environments:

Because candidiasis is a yeast infection, it thrives on moulds. Not only must sufferers avoid foods containing moulds, induding those which are invisible to the naked eye, such as yeast in bread, mushrooms, dried fruit and cheeses, they must also avoid situations where mould spores are endemic in the atmosphere. Candidiasis sufferers will notice that when in supermarkets, they feel tired, headachy, fuzzy in the head, and can even develop breathing problems. This is partly due to the yeast spores floating around in the atmosphere from countless yeast-containing products stacked on the shelves.

Symptoms will also be aggravated where there is dampness, such as in a basement, or near poorly drained areas and bodies of water. Sneezing, running nose and aching are other immediate reactions likely in such situations. Humidity levels are another vital factor. Candidiasis sufferers will invariably feel worse when humidity is higher than usual. For this reason, avoid water-evaporative air cooling in home and office environments.

Anti-Fungal Drugs:

There are several drugs that kill or suppress the growth of Candida albicans in the body. One of these is ketaconazole, which is a powerful drug for getting at deep-seated Candida, but should not be used long-term. Others are flagyl, nystatin and mycostatin, which are all effective antifungals capable of being used with safety for up to a year. Obviously drugs are to be avoided whenever possible. In the case of candidiasis, it has been found that long-term treatment, with an antifungal drug, is of great benefit in reducing the level of yeast in the body back to manageable proportions, which the immune system can then take over and again effectively control. However, because of the individual’s previous susceptibility to Candida, continuous avoidance of all yeast-containing and yeastencouraging foods must be maintained in order to remain permanently free of the problem. Otherwise, a recurrence is most likely.

The drug nystatin is particularly safe to the body, in general, as it is poorly absorbed through the intestinal tract. It is considered effective only for yeast infections of mucosal and skin surfaces where it is brought into contact with Candida, such as in the intestinal tract. It may also be taken in liquid form to attack Candida flourishing in the oesophagus and the mouth. In women, the tendency for Candida to occur in the vagina can be effectively dealt with by the use of vaginal suppositories.

The usual starting dosage of nystatin is one tablet, four times daily, taken in conjunction with the liquid form and suppositories. The dosage is increased to eight tablets daily, after three to six weeks. It can be increased up to a maximum of sixteen tablets daily, after a further three, to six weeks, if required. If no additional benefit is derived at this level the dosage should be reduced to that at which maximum relief from symptoms is achieved.

Initial side effects can sometimes occur when nystatin therapy is commenced. These can be in the form of an exacerbation of symptoms because the body can, initially, be overloaded by the toxic effects of dead Candida cells until they are eliminated. This lasts a few days only and is known as a Herxheimer Reaction. Within two or three weeks a great improvement is felt and chronic symptoms that have existed for years begin to disappear. Food and chemical intolerances become a thing of the past and sense of good health and well-being returns.
