I have some questions about PCOS. I was diagnosed today.?

My doctor diagnosed me with PCOS today.
He even said you wouldn’t think I had it because I dont fit the “mold”.
He says that women with PCOS are overweight, losing hair, have acne and hair growth on the face.
I however am underweight, I have a full head of hair (but I have had alopecia areata) I have pimples that come and go and I have hair growth on my face but nothing major…

The only real symptoms of PCOS I have is fatigue….”higher than normal testosterone levels” and infertility (but I have been pregnant twice – both miscarriagew)
I think he’s just trying to throw a name on my symptoms…
I don’t believe I have it….
have you heard of a skinny woman with a full head of hair, no acne, no diabetes and no major hair growth on the face having PCOS????

And would an ultrasound show PCOS? I’ve had plenty ultrasounds done of my ovaries and I’ve heard nothing about PCOS.

  1. Other disorders that cause high testosterone besides PCOS include acromegaly, adrenal neoplasm disorders, Conn’s syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, dwarfism, gigantism or multiple endocrine neoplasm 1 and 2, androgen-producing adrenal or ovarian tumor, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and thyroid imbalance. I would get a second opinion.

  2. I don’t have diabetes either. I have a full head of hair,no acne and i do have PCOS. I do get some of the facial hair, have infertility issues and very slightly overweight. An ultrasound does show PCOS, it is a pelvic ultasound and it shows if you have cysts on your ovaries. I had about 50 on each. But you should get a second opinion just to make sure you don’t have something else.

  3. I think the main issue with PCOS is that we don’t ovulate regularly, therefore we don’t have our periods every month. I have PCOS, don’t have diabetes and have been pregnant once… She ended up being healthy, but 7 weeks premature. Having PCOS puts us at higher risk for miscarriages and premature births. I do have a lot of the other classic PCOS symptoms too though.

Also ultrasounds DO NOT always diagnose PCOS. I have had plenty of ultrasounds and none of them showed any cysts, but my blood work showed higher levels of testosterone. If you are concerned that you don’t think you have PCOS, you should get a second opinion. But there are always exceptions to the rule and you may be one of them! Good luck!
