Mould Issues – Read this First.
Mold Detection And Removal
Hello, you are probably here because you have found what looks like some sort of mold in a moist area of your home or business and you are worried about the ramifications in terms of health and how the mould is to be removed.
You will note that we spell mold/mould in two differing ways as officially this word’s spelling is different in the UK and its former Colonies vs the United States. But the truth is that its all the same thing, a deadly little pest that can kill not only you and your family but other vermin that are typically immune to such things.
Mice, rats and other such pests are also killed by mold infestation and this means that your own pets are not safe either.
Protect your Family – Beware of Bad information
This is a community generated blog and as such, it will contain a significant amount of information in the form of youtube videos, articles, pictures, user comments etc.
Not all the information contributed by the public will be correct but as a community blog, we generally edit or delete only blog comments that contain swear words, defamatory language etc.
A number of well written articles will tell you that you can use certain sprays, fungacides etc., to remove mold. In most cases many of those well meaning article writers have not actually examined a mold culture to determine how virulent and nasty it is. After having made that determination, there is a health and safety process that must be followed to the “T” in order to absolutely protect the family, the pets, the workers removing the mold and to stop the spread of the mold during its removal.
If you find a patch of mould/mold and its covering an area larger than a small book, the patch that you are seeing may be the tip of an iceberg, particularly since mold tends to grow in dark damp places and by the time its seen, its because it has come through from the other side of a wood panel or something like that.
Mold – the silent Killer
Mold coming through wood ( yes, mold loves to eat wood ) is not going to be something you can handle with mould removal fungacides. Nor should you try since the act of drying or attacking the mold will cause active spore activity that will make the mold mobile in the air.
Since some mold spores can be as small as 5 microns or less, they will penetrate and get right into your lungs where they multiply every 15 minutes. By the time you realize that you personally have a problem, you may not even associate that problem with the DIY ( Do it Yourself ) mold removal that you attempted several months earlier.
The physical symptom mimics cancer and the only way that a doctor can truly rule out cancer is to call in the surgeon to perform a biopsy.
Its the reason that mold removal experts where Hazmat ( hazardous materials ) suits and don’t allow mold spores to get anywhere near their lungs.
Mold loves DIY
Take mold seriously, don’t attack mold without a true knowledge of what you are doing. We suggest that you personally don’t attack mold at all unless you have the hazmat suit, dry air scrubbers, some place to move the family for a few day etc.
Why does mold love the handy man ? Because he is usually unaware that mold can take flight as soon as it feels it under attack. What will mold spores flying around do to your children who may be right behind you watching your activity? Let’s not find out.
When you see US based TV shows like “Pimp my house” where they have discovered mold in a house they are trying to flip, you will also note that due to state regulations that house can be condemned depending on the type of mold found and other factors. It is not a made for TV stunt when you see guys with full Hazmat suits running in there to do a 3-5 day cleanup with specialized equipment and other specialists who are testing the load bearing wood structures to ensure that the mold has not weakened the structural integrity of the house.
Act swiftly, but don’t do it alone.
